A farsa é un xénero teatral que nace na Idade Media como obriña intercalada en dramas relixiosos; o termo farcire latino expresa que é un recheo. As primeiras mostras documentais son francesas do século XII, sendo a fonte de inspiración a tradición contística medieval e renacentista. Presenta gran flexibilidade: desde un simple desfile cómico ata unha especie de comedia de costumes.
Tres trazos definitorios: brevidade, comicidade e dependencia sinalan as coincidencias co entremés, inda que as diferenzas existen e veñen dadas polos recursos e matices, recursos que procuran unha acumulación esquemática de situacións caricaturescas ó redor dunha anécdota cómica.
O elenco é reducido, 3 ou 4 personaxes de estrato social modesto: artesáns, pastores, criados, mestre de escola,... Están caracterizados como tipos mediocres moral ou intelectualmente. A falta de acoutacións -non hai apoios espaciais nin temporais- nos textos dificulta a reconstrución do desenvolvemento da farsa (suponse que se confiaba na capacidade de improvisación verbal e non verbal dos actores).
Tematicamente encontramos unha repetición incansable sobre os mesmos temas que xiran ó redor das vivencias cotiás: amor, autoridade, relación amo-criado, compañeiro e compañeira, astucia e engano.
