En bioloxía, extinción é a desaparición de todos os individuos dunha especie ou xénero. Considérase unha especie como extinta a partir do intre en que morre o seu último individuo, inda que de facto pode estalo desde que a comunidade perdeu a capacidade de reprodución ou recuperación.
Debido a que o seu rango de distribución potencial pode ser moi grande, determinar ese momento pode non ser doado, polo que decote faise en retrospectiva. Estas dificultades poden conducir a fenómenos como o taxon Lazarus, no que unha especie que se presumía extinta reaparece tras un período de aparente ausencia. No caso de especies que se reproducen sexualmente, a extinción é xeralmente inevitábel cando só queda un individuo da especie ou unicamente individuos do mesmo sexo.
Segundo datos da Unión Internacional para a Conservación da Natureza e dos Recursos Naturais (IUCN) no planeta hai 17 mil especies de animais e plantas ameazadas de extinción incluíndo un terzo dos anfibios, máis dunha de cada oito especies de aves e preto dun cuarto dos mamíferos.[1]
