- (XIIIe siècle) Du moyen anglais gawnt, maigre, mince, provenant probablement du vieux norrois gandr (« bâton magique, baguette »), du proto-germanique *gandaz (« baguette, bâton ») et du indo-européen commun *gʷʰen- (« frapper, toucher, conduire »).
