En 1969, son premier album, Empty Sky, est publié. En 1970, Elton John sort son deuxième album éponyme, Elton John, qui contient son premier single à succès, Your Song, sa première chanson à atteindre le top 10 au Royaume-Uni et aux États-Unis.

Tout au long de sa carrière, Elton John a vendu plus de 300 millions de disques à travers le monde, ce qui fait de lui l'un des artistes ayant vendu le plus de disques de tous les temps^[1],[2].
