Le championnat de Nouvelle-Zélande d'échecs est une compétition qui permet de désigner le meilleur joueur d’échecs de Nouvelle-Zélande. Il s’est tenu pour la première fois en 1879. Elle est organisée par la Fédération néo-zélandaise des échecs.
Les championnats organisés par la Fédération néo-zélandaise des échecs incluent sont le championnat principal, mais aussi celui de Premier Reserve et le Major Open.

Les règles d'éligibilité ont été modifiées en 1935 pour empêcher cela; John Angus Erskine (double champion en 1929 et 1935) est né à Invercargill et était donc éligible alors qu'il était domicilié à Melbourne, en Australie.
