Kuolajoki (ven. Куолайоки) on joki Kemijoen vesistössä Suomen ja Venäjän alueilla. Joen koko valuma-alue on noin 1550 km².[2] Suomen puolella tästä on karkeasti noin 675 km².[3]
Kuolajoki saa alkunsa Kuolajärvestä Murmanskin alueen länsiosasta. Sieltä joki virtaa länteen valtakunnan rajan yli Sallan kunnan alueelle. Joki laskee Tenniöjokeen Sallan Saijan kylän luona.[1]
Venäjän puolella Kuolajoen suurin sivujoki on jokeen etelästä laskeva Sallajoki. Suomen puolella jokeen laskee etelästä lähellä joen suuta Aatsinginjoki.
Ennen toista maailmansotaa koko joki valuma-alueineen kuului Suomeen osana Sallan kuntaa.[4]
Kun Sallan–Kuusamon alue sodan päätyttyyä vuonna 1944 luovutettiin Neuvostoliitolle, Sallan kunta menetti lähes puolet pinta-alastaan.[4] Luovutetulle alueelle jäi Kuolajoesta sen yläjuoksu, sivujoki Sallajoki ja Kuolajoen lähdejärvi Kuolajärvi.
Jokivarren kyliä joen suulla olevan Sallan Saijan lisäksi ovat Venäjän puolella rajaa luovutetulle alueelle jäänyt entinen Sallan kirkonkylä (Sallajoen suussa, kylänä alkujaan nimeltään Sallansuu, kirkonkylänä Sallan kunnan entisen nimen mukaan myös Kuolajärvi, ven. Куолаярви, Kuolojaärvi, mutta eri kuin Kuolajärven rannoilla sijainnut ja kunnalle alkujaan nimensä antanut varsinainen Kuolajärven kylä, ven. Кайралы, Kairaly) sekä Suomen puolella Kotala, Särkelä ja Mukkala.
Joen ja järven nimi ei liity suomen kielen sanaan kuola eikä myöskään suomen kielen verbiin kuolla. vaan nimi tulee saamelaiskielten kalaa tarkoittavasta sanasta, esimerkiksi pohjoissaameksi guolli, "kala".[1][5]
Kuolajoki on nykyisin lähinnä virkistyskäytössä. Joskus aikanaan alueella asuneiden ihmisten pitikin maksaa veronsa sekä Ruotsille että Venäjälle kaloina: kymmenen leiviskää kuivattua haukea jokaisesta yli 17-vuotiaasta henkilöstä.
