Ukraina 2001. aasta rahvaloenduse järgi oli linna elanike hulgas 77,1% ukrainlasi, 9,0% venelasi ja 8,5% ungarlasi.[2]
Linna ungarikeelne nimi Munkács on saadud isikunimest, mis on tuletatud nimisõnast munka 'töö'.[viide?]
Ukraina keeles on paralleelselt käibel olnud mitu varianti linna nimest. Normeeritud variant linna nimest oli kuni 23. maini 2017 Mukatševe. Siis sai Ülemraada otsusega linna ametlikuks nimeks Mukatševo.[3] Kasutusel on olnud ka nimekuju Mukatšiv (Мукачів).
Linna tekkimisaeg pole teada, kuid linna lähedalt on leitud paleoliitikumi asulakohti. 6. sajandil oli nüüdse linna piirkonnas slaavi asustus. Legendi järgi ehitas linnuse 9. sajandil ungari vürst Álmos. Ungari kroonikas on asulat esmamainitud 1064. aastal ning 1138. aastal nimega Muncas. Linn kuulus 10. või 11. sajandist alates 1538. aastani Ungari kuningriigile. 1445. aastal sai linnaõigused. Seejärel kuulus Munkács Transilvaania vürstiriigi ja aastatel 1867–1918 Austria-Ungari keisririigi, 1918–1938 Tšehhoslovakkia ja 1938–1944 taas Ungari koosseisu.
1910. aastal oli linnas 17 275 elanikku, neist 12 686 (73,44%) ungarlased, 3078 (17,82%) sakslased ja 1394 russiinid.
11. juulil 2015 sai linnas alguse relvastatud konflikt Paremsektori võitlejate ja miilitsa vahel, mille põhjuseks oli Parem Sektori tungimine kriminaalse taustaga parlamendisaadiku Mõhhailo Lanjo valdustesse. Tulevahetuse käigus sai surma vähemalt kolm inimest, kellest kaks olid Parem Sektori võitlejad.[4][5] Väidetavalt olid Mukatševo sündmused ajendiks mitmete muudatuste tegemisele oblasti juhtkonnas.[6]
Mukatševost on pärit ansambli Okean Elzy solist Svjatoslav Vakartšuk.
