Järv asub merepinnast 0,1 meetri kõrgusel. Selle veetaset alandas 1,8 meetri võrra XX sajandi alguses rajatud Jugla kanal; enne kanali rajamist oli tegemist umbjärvega.
Järve kaldad on lauged. Põhi on osalt mudane, seal esineb murdunud puid. Järves elab 13 liiki kalu.
Lielais Baltezersis on kuus saart kogupindalaga 14,5 ha. Saarad on Ropažu sala (Ropaži saar, 4,5 ha), Priežu sala (Männisaar, 3,7 ha), Auzu sala (Kaerasaar, 3 ha), Liepu sala (Pärnasaar, 2,8 ha), Jaunā sala (Uus saar, 1,4 ha) ja Mazā sala (Väike saar, 0,5 ha). Aastal 1977 moodustati saarte ja seal kasvava metsa kaitseks hoiuala, kus on rikkalik soontaimede koosseis. Saartel kasvavad männid ja pärnad, kallastel ka sanglepad.[2]
Asulaist asuvad järve kallastel Ādaži piirkonnas Baltezers, Garkalne piirkonda jäävad Priedkalne, Bukulti ja Baltezers.
