Arunachal Pradesh, mida varem nimetati NEFA (North East Frontier Agency), oli 1987. aastani Assami osariigi osa. Talle anti osariigi staatus, arvestades julgeolekukaalutlusi idapiiril ning Hiina ja India vahelisi pingeid. Hiina peab Arunachal Pradeshi endale kuuluva Tiibeti osaks.
Osariigi rahvastik on etniliselt mitmekesine. 2001. aasta rahvaloenduse andmeil oli 64,2% elanikest adivasid, mis on ühisnimetus erinevatele põliselanike hõimudele, mida kokku on osariigis üle 100. Neist 25 on üle 5000 liikmega. Suuremad hõimud on Nissi, Adi Gallong, Wancho, Dafla, Monpa, Tagin, Adi Minyong, Nocte, Adi, Apatani, Galong, Mishmi, Nishang, Tangsa, Abor, Mishing (Miri), Khampti ja Adi Padam. Ülejäänud elanikkond on sisserännanud.
Põliselanikud räägivad erinevaid tiibeti-birma keeli. Immigrantide seas räägitakse enim bengali, nepali ja hindi keelt.
34,6% elanikest on hinduistid, 18,7% kristlased, 13,0% budistid ja 1,9% muslimid. 31,6% tunnistavad teisi, valdavalt animistlikke usundeid.
Osariik jaguneb 18 ringkonnaks:
