Éire (Irish: [ˈeːɾʲə]) is the Irish Gaelic name for "Ireland". Like its English counterpart, the term Éire is used for both the island of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the sovereign state which governs 85% of the island's landmass. The latter is distinct from Northern Ireland, which covers the remainder of the northeast of the island. The same name is also sometimes used in English (English: /ˈɛərə/ AIR-ə).
