Catch-22 is a 1961 novel by Joseph Heller, an anti-war novel and a general critique of bureaucracy. The novel's title is from a catch, or snag, first described in the quote from chapter 5 below. The phrase "catch-22" almost immediately entered common usage for that kind of conundrum or sense-defeating logic.
