The Roman Catholic cemetery was built between 1857 and 1859. Its architect, Charles Baillargé, took inspiration from the noted garden cemetery of Green-Wood, in Brooklyn, New York State, United States. The cemetery was blessed on July 10, 1859, and Belmont Cemetery's first burial took place two days later.
