From แผ่น (pɛ̀n, “sheet”) + ดิน (din, “earth”), literally “sheet of earth”, possibly reflecting the Flat Earth belief. Compare Lao ແຜ່ນດິນ (phǣn din), Lü ᦶᦕᧃᧈᦡᦲᧃ (ṗhaen¹ḋiin), Tai Dam ꪵꪠ꪿ꪙ ꪒꪲꪙ.
