Borrowed from Catalan trèvol, from Vulgar Latin *trifulus < *trifolum, from Latin trifolium, calque of Ancient Greek τρίφυλλον (tríphullon, “clover”), from τρία (tría, “three”) + φύλλον (phúllon, “leaf”). Doublet of trifolio. Cognate with English trefoil.
