Etymology 2

Ultimately borrowed from Turkic, likely Bulgar, however the exact source is uncertain, there exists multiple proposals:

• According to Róna-Tas either from Proto-Turkic *sākïn- (“to think, to desire”) or Proto-Turkic *sān- (“to count, to think”).^[1] In which case cognate with Chuvash сун (sun, “to desire”) or Chuvash шухăш (šuhăš, “thought, desire”).
• According to Ünal from Proto-Turkic *yan- (“to burn, blaze; to regret, worry”) via his proposed S-Turkic dialect.^[2] In which case cognate with Chuvash ҫун (śun, “to burn; to suffer”).
