From Low German schrumpen, from Middle Low German *schrumpen (attested in Middle Low German vorschrumpen, vörschrumpen (“to shrivel, wrinkle”)), related to German schrumpfen (“to shrivel, shrink”), Danish skrumpe (“to shrink”). Related to English shrimp.
