Inherited from Latin saliva, probably with influence of the prefix ex-, cf. sceverare.[1] However, it would be unusual for this prefix to be attached to a noun. For more examples of initial s- palatalized to sci-, see scimmia, scempio, sciringa (doublet of siringa).
