From Latin quadrāgēnārius (“containing 40”) + -an, either directly or via French quadragénaire, from Latin quadrāgēnus (“40 each”) + -ārius (“-ary”), from quadrāgintā (“four tens, forty”). Cognate with quadragenary, quadragenarious, and quadragene.
