Etymology

Cognate with Latvian lēzns (“flat, even”), of uncertain further origin. Often connected to Proto-Germanic *lēgaz (“low, flat”), assuming an earlier form of lēž-tas for the Lithuanian (based on the Latvian cognates), and further taken to be from a Proto-Indo-European *leh₁ģʰ- (“to lie down”);^[1] however, the Proto-Indo-European root in question is generally reconstructed as *legʰ-, which cannot produce the Baltic forms.

Possibly related to ložė́ti (“to lie down on the ground; (of grain blown by rain and wind) to fly off”).
