Borrowed from French hydrogène. Coined by Lavoisier and his team, from Ancient Greek ὑδρο- (hudro-, “water”) (from ὕδωρ (húdōr, “water”)) + -γενής (-genḗs, “producer of”) (from γεννάω (gennáō, “to bring forth”)). By surface analysis, hidro- + -geno.
