From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gulbis, according to Pokorny, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (“to flourish, shine, be joyful”).[1]
Balto-Slavic cognates include dialectal Lithuanian gulbis, Latvian gùlbis (“swan”), Old Prussian gulbis (“swan”), Proto-Slavic *gъlbь.
