From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *təŋaq with *gi- prefix (cf. Cebuano gi-). Compare Ilocano tengnga (“middle”), Kapampangan pitna (“halve”), Bikol Central tanga (“between”), Cebuano tunga (“half, middle, center”), Waray-Waray butnga (“middle”), Tausug tunga' (“half”), and Malay tengah (“mid, amid”).
