Etymology

Doublet of trở in modern written Vietnamese.

Originally the (inland) Northern form (see giai for the sound change), now widely used in the written language. In the meaning "to turn, to change", its usage has been eclipsed by the Central-Southern form trở.

Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as ⿰呂巴, composed of 巴 (MC pae) + 呂 (MC ljoX) (modern SV: ba lã) and 呂 (MC ljoX) (modern SV: lã).

   • 1909, Phan Kế Bính, “Lương-hữu-Khánh”, in Nam Hải dị nhân liệt truyện:

     Bà kia y nhời ấy giở về làm cơm. Ông ấy mới cầm một con dao to lội xuống ruộng dọn cỏ, chưa đến buổi trưa, đã dọn quang cả 5 mẫu ruộng. Dọn xong, nằm ngủ dưới gốc cây, tiếng ngáy như sấm.

     The old lady followed his words and went home to prepare a meal. He took a big machete, wading through the fields to clear all the vegetation; not even noon, he had already cleared five mẫu. Done with slashing weeds, he took a nap in the shade of a tree, his snores were thunderous.

   • 1961, Nguyễn Huy Tưởng, Sống mãi với Thủ Đô‎:

     Tiếng kêu râm ran:
     - Nó chiếm sở Tài chính rồi! Nó giở mặt thực sự rồi!
