An onomatopoeia with an uncertain origin. Probably from the same stem as the verb fecseg (“to babble, chatter”). It's also possible that it's from Proto-Finno-Ugric *päčkɜ (“swallow”). Cognates include Finnish pääsky and Estonian pääsuke.[1][2]
