Sino-Vietnamese word from 博士, composed of 博 (“wide; vast; broad”) and 士 (“-ist”), from Japanese 博士 (hakushi, “doctor”, person who has attained a doctorate), earlier 博士 (hakase, “Japanese court academician”), from Middle Chinese 博士 (pwɑk̚ d͡ʒɨX, “Chinese court academician”). Also probably by analogy with European languages, such as English doctor, French docteur (“Ph.D.; M.D.; physician”).
