From Late Latin aldius (“half-freeman”), from Lombardic *aldi, from Proto-West Germanic *aldī, from Proto-Germanic *aldiz (“human being, man”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (“to grow”). Cognate with Old Saxon aldi, eldi (“human being, person, man”), Old English ielde pl (“men”).
