A contraction of unattested *alāwu, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁-won-, a form of Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (“to grind”), making it cognate with Ancient Greek ἄλευρον (áleuron) and Old Armenian ալիւր (aliwr), both meaning "flour".
