Etymology
Westerhaar is first attested as Op de Haar in 1849. Vriezenveensewijk is first attested as Friezenveensche Wijk of Veenkanaal in 1936. Westerhaar is a compound of wester (“west-, western”) and haar (“sandy ridge”). Vriezenveensewijk is a compound of the toponym Vriezenveen and wijk (“secondary canal in a turf extraction area”).
