Two possible origins:
- English habitational surname from the villages of Great, Little and Duns Tew, in Oxfordshire, all from Old English tīewe (“row; lenghty object”) or tīwe (“meeting place, court”).
- Welsh nickname for a fat man, from Welsh tew (“plump”).
