Noun

Nachwahl f (genitive Nachwahl, plural Nachwahlen)

1. an election that takes place after the general election date, but does not establish a new legislative period
   1. election held when the general date could not be kept in a district by an act of God (e.g. when a local candidate died shortly before)
   2. by-election (election to fill a seat that has become vacant)

      Synonym: Ersatzwahl

Usage notes

• By-elections (sense 1.2) hardly ever occur in Germany because vacant seats are filled in other ways.
