From Old High German kuning, from Proto-Germanic *kuningaz, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁- (“to produce, beget, give birth”). Cognate with German König, Plautdietsch Kjennich, Saterland Frisian Köönich, Dutch koning, English king, and Norwegian konge.

Not in common use, but still seen in the names of inns, pubs, etc. Keenig is the modern form; Chüng is only used in the context of card games.
