Heerlen
First attested as Late Latin Coriouallum and Corioualum around 300. Derived from a Germanic calque of an earlier Celtic name. The Germanic term is a compound of Proto-Germanic *harja- (“army”) and *walla (“wall”). An alternative theory posits that the Germanic term was calqued into Celtic. Proposed derivations from *harila (“small sandy ridge”) or a compound of Old Dutch her (“army”) and le (“burial mound”) are incorrect. Compare Heel and Heerle.
