First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 굳 (Yale: kwut).
The modern form is equivalent to 굳 (gut) + 엉 (-eong, diminutive suffix) + 이 (-i, noun suffix), and is first attested in the mid-nineteenth century.
