First attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 거웆〮 (Yale: kèwúc). Originally mostly referred to facial hair as in the now-obsolete 입거웃 (ipgeout, “facial hair”), but this sense has been completely displaced by Sino-Korean 수염 (鬚髥, suyeom, “facial hair”).
