Etymology
개 (gae, “dog”) + 돼지 (dwaeji, “pig”), animals with traditionally low status in Korea. Compare Chinese 猪狗 (“contemptible person”, literally “pig and dog”).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈkɛ(ː)dwɛd͡ʑi] ~ [ˈke̞(ː)dwɛd͡ʑi] ~ [ˈkɛ(ː)dwe̞d͡ʑi] ~ [ˈke̞(ː)dwe̞d͡ʑi]
- Phonetic hangul: [개(ː)돼지/게(ː)돼지/개(ː)뒈지/게(ː)뒈지]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
