Etymology 1: Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *qʰʷɯl) : semantic 衣 (“clothing”) + phonetic 韋 (OC *ɢʷɯl).
Etymology 2: Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *qʰʷɯl) : phonetic 衣 (OC *qɯl, *qɯls) + semantic 韋. To prevent confusion it is more commonly written as 禕/祎 (yī).
