合衆國 (kyūjitai) |
From Literary Chinese 合眾國 (hézhòngguó), from 合 (“union”) + 眾國 (“democratic state”), which is a calque of English United States, probably coined by Elijah Coleman Bridgman before 1844.[1] Soon rebracketed as 合衆 (gasshū, “assembly of people”) and 国 (koku, “state”).
