Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *tʰɯːwɢ): semantic 亻 (“person”) + phonetic 周 (OC *tjɯw). This character did not appear in the original version of Shuowen, but was added in by Xu Xuan, who was not able to identify 周 (zhōu) as the phonetic due to the phonetic discrepancy between 周 (MC tsyuw) and 倜 (MC thek).
