Etymology

From アイヌ (ainu, “human”) +‎ モシㇼ (mosir, “land”). First attested in a 1591 Latin manuscript titled "De yezorum insula" as "Aino moxori" or "Aino mosir" as the name of Hokkaido, meaning "land of the Aino [Ainu]".
