From Proto-Hellenic *wókʷs, from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs (voice). Related to ἔπος (épos) and εἰπεῖν (eipeîn). Cognates include Latin vōx, Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c), and Tocharian A wak.[1]
