From Proto-Hellenic *elaíwā (whence also Mycenaean Greek 𐀁𐀨𐀷 (e-ra-wa)). Probably a borrowing from a Mediterranean Pre-Greek source, which also gave Old Armenian եւղ (ewł, “oil”).[1]
