From Proto-Germanic *erfaz. Possibly related to Old Norse jarpr (“brown”), Old English eorp (“brown; dark, dusky”), from Proto-Germanic *erpaz (“light brown”), in which case from Proto-Indo-European *h₁erbʰ-, cognate with Ancient Greek ὀρφνός (orphnós, “dark brown”).
