Uncertain. Perhaps from Sanskrit ब्रह्मादेश (brahmādeśa, “country of Brahma”), a compound of ब्रह्मा (brahmā, “Brahma”) + देश (deśa, “country”) or from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan root related to Chinese 蠻/蛮 (mán, “barbarian”) and Tibetan བྲན (bran, “servant, slave”). Historical alternative spellings include မြမ္မာ (mramma) and မြံမာ (mramma). See also *mraʔ (“person”).
