Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kəw (“body; chest; thorax; corpse”). Cognate with Yao'an Lolopo ggechir (“body”), Tangut 𘓷 (*kwər¹, “body”), Tibetan སྐུ (sku, “body”), Old Chinese 軀 (OC *kʰo), Drung vnggeu (“body”), shigeu (“corpse”) (STEDT). Spelling is influenced by Pali kāya (“body”).
The pronoun sense is a semantic extension of the "body" sense, via "body" > "one's own body" > "oneself" (STEDT: kuiy "one's self").
