From Pali puñña (“good; merit”); perhaps via Old Khmer punya, pūnya, punye, puṇa, puna, pūna, °pana (“good or pious work; act of merit; merit; ceremony, rite, service; festival”). Cognate with Lao ບຸນ (bun), Lü ᦢᦳᧃ (ḃun), Khmer បុញ្ញ (boññɔɔ), Burmese ပုည (pu.nya.).
