Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *tɔːŋᴬ² (“banana leaf”), from Proto-Tai *k.toːŋᴬ (“big leaf for wrapping”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩬᨦ, Lao ຕອງ (tǭng), Shan တွင် (tǎung), Tai Nüa ᥖᥩᥒ (toang), Phake တွင် (toṅ), Ahom 𑜄𑜨𑜂𑜫 (toṅ).
