Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘫𑘎𑘜𑘹 (śakaṇe), 𑘭𑘎𑘜𑘹 (sakaṇe), from Apabhramsa सक्कइ (sakkaï), from Prakrit 𑀲𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀇 (sakkaï), from Sanskrit शक्नोति (śaknóti),[1] from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śaknáwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćaknáwti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱₔk-néw-ti, from the root *ḱek- (“to be able”).
