Etymology 1
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dáHtā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáHtā, from Proto-Indo-European *déh₃tōr (“giver, donor”), from *deh₃- (“to give”) (whence ददाति (dádāti)). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬁𐬙𐬀𐬭 (dātar), Ancient Greek δώτωρ (dṓtōr)/δωτήρ (dōtḗr), Latin dator.
