Borrowed from Classical Persian غَرِیب (ğarīb), from Arabic غَرِيب (ḡarīb, “foreign(er); strange, peculiar”). Compare Bengali গরীব (gorib), Gujarati ગરીબ (garīb), Marathi गरीब (garīb).
