    Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀭𑁂𑀇 (karei), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀓𑀭𑁄𑀢𑀺 (karoti), from Sanskrit क॒रोति॑ (karóti), from कृ॒णोति॑ (kṛṇóti), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷer- + *-néwti.

    Etymology

    Perhaps from Sogdian. According to Burhan-i Qati, the کر (kar) portion is equivalent to the کار (kâr) in کارزار (kârzâr, battle, battlefield) and کاروان (kârvân, convoy), going back to Old Persian 𐎣𐎠𐎼 (k-a-r /⁠kāra⁠/, army), while the second portion is نای (nây, flute).
